Healing

God as our Healer (Jehovah Rapha)

When you’re sick, weary, or broken, where do you turn first? Many of us reach for medicine, advice, or self-help strategies those can all be good places to start. But, the Bible reveals a deeper truth: God Himself is our ultimate healer. His very name declares it. In Exodus 15:26 He says, “I am the Lord who heals you.” The Hebrew name here is Jehovah Rapha meaning, “The Lord who heals.”

Healing is not just something God does from time to time. It’s part of who He is. His character, compassion, and covenant love all point to His desire to restore His people both body and spirit. Let’s look a little more closely at what the Bible teaches about God as our healer.

1. The Meaning of Jehovah Rapha

The name Jehovah Rapha first appears when Israel had just been freed from slaverly in Egypt. They came to a place called Marah, where the water was bitter and undrinkable. God performed a miracle making the water sweet. Then he declared,

“If you listen carefully to the Lord your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to His commands and keep all His decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians for I am the Lord, who heals you.” Exodus 15:26

This was more than a promise of physical health. God was revealing His very nature: He is the one who heals, The word “Rapha” in Hebrew means to restore, to make whole, to repair. It speaks of complete healing, body, mind and spirit.

2. God’s Healing In The Old Testament

Throughout the Old Testament, we see God’s healing power at work.

  1. Naaman, he was healed of leprosy after obeying the prophet Elisha’s instructions. (2 Kings5)
  2. King Hezekiah cried out to God when he was near death, and the Lord added 15 years to his life. (2 Kings 20:1-6)
  3. 3. God promised Israel in Deuteronomy 7:15, “The Lord will keep you free from every disease.”

The Old Testament looked forward to a day when God’s healing would be fully revealed. That day came in the ministry of Jesus. Everywhere He went, Jesus healed the sick, restored the broken, and brought wholeness.

  • The blind received their sight. (John 9)
  • The lame walked (Mark 2:1-12)
  • Lepers were cleansed (Luke 17:11-19)
  • The dead were raised (John 11:1-44)

Each miracle was a living testimony that God’s Kingdom had broken into a hurting world.

Matthew 8:17 tells us that Jesus fulfilled Isaiah’s prophesy: “He took up our infirmities and bore our diseases.” Healing was central to His mission because it showed the heart of God. Every miracle revealed both power and compassion. Jesus was, and is the ultimate expression of Jehovah Rapha.

4. Healing Beyond The Body

While we often think of healing in terms of the physical body, God’s healing reaches far deeper. He cares about broken hearts, wounded souls, and damaged relationships.

“He heals the broken hearted and binds up their wounds.” Psalms 147:3

God’s healing is holistic. He offers peace to anxious minds, comfort to grieving hearts, and reconciliation in places of division. Many people experience His healing in forgiveness, freedom from shame, and restoration of joy, in fact the greatest healing we can receive is not physical, it is the healing of our relationship with God, through Jesus Christ.

5. Living In The Reality of God’s Healing Today

  • Through Prayer and faith:

James 5:14-15 encourages believers to call the elders, anoint with oil, and pray in faith. God still heals in response to prayer.

  • Through His Word
    • Proverbs 4:20-22 describes God’s Word as “life to those who find them and health to one’s whole body” Reading and applying scripture brings spiritual and emotional restoration.
  • Through different means
    • Sometimes God heals miraculously, other times He uses medicine, doctors or natural processes. Sometimes healing comes not as physical restoration but as strength to endure with peace.
  • Through eternal hope
    • Not all healing comes in this life. The ultimate promise is in revelation 21:4, “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain. In eternity, healing will be complete.

Conclusion

When God revealed Himself as Jehovah Rapha. “The Lord who heals you” He was declaring something about His eternal nature. Healing is not just something He does occasionally, it’s part of who He is. From Isreal’s wilderness journey, to the miracles of Jesus, to the promise of eternal restoration, God is always working to heal, restore, and make whole.
